Differences Between LED Bulbs and LED Fixtures

What are LED Bulbs?

Lighting fixtures made with LED are very efficient in terms of lumens per watt (lm/W) when compared to other old products. They are produced in different shapes and sizes depending on the usage area and purpose.

What are LED Luminaires?

LED Luminaires are similar in shape to classical lighting fixtures. However, it is specially designed for LEDs to work properly. Old lighting cases will not be compatible with LEDs, even if they are exactly the same.

Differences Between LED Bulbs and Fixtures

physical design

  1. LED Bulbs allow for similar changes in shape with old-style bulbs. Some lamps may be incompatible with connectors for LED tube bulbs, especially for fluorescents.
  2. LED Fixtures, on the other hand, come in different sizes, styles, shapes and connection options. They are as diverse as traditional products. It can be used indoors or outdoors with the feature of the material it is used in. To give an example of LED Lighting Fixtures; ceiling and wall sconces , spot fixtures , recessed mounted fixtures , tracklight fixtures , panel fixtures , backlight fixtures can be shown. Fixtures sometimes come with LEDs inside or may need to be purchased separately.

It is possible to convert some existing luminaires to LED luminaires. Specifically, fluorescent lighting can be converted to LED lighting with some rewiring and removal of any ballast in the fixture.

Ease of Installation and Replacement

  1. LED bulbs can be easily replaced with old bulbs. You can simply remove the old product by hand and replace it with LED bulbs.
  2. LED fixtures are not a change. It looks more like a physical update. These luminaires must be properly attached to the wall or ceiling. It is much more complicated than replacing LED bulbs. However, it gives you more possibilities in design and lighting options.

Average Lifespan

  1. An LED bulb works for 20,000 – 25,000 hours. Classic incandescent bulbs have a maximum life of 10,000 hours.
  2. LED Luminaires should be able to work for many years without wearing out, depending on the weather conditions of the place where they will be used. In addition, a product designed for indoors should not be used outdoors. In such a case, it may cause corrosion of the product and power outages. When designing the luminaire, it should be designed with all these factors in mind.

Cost

  1. LED bulbs were more expensive than conventional bulbs when they first came out. However, over time, the price difference has decreased.
  2. LED Lighting fixtures are more costly than bulb replacements. Installation and supporting hardware are required along with the fixture.

Summary of LED Bulbs and LED Fixtures

LED bulbs and fixtures are used for lighting. LED bulbs act as the actual lighting source, while LED fixtures are the physical hardware in which the bulbs are placed.

LED bulbs and fixtures can replace traditional lighting sources. Most existing sockets are compatible with LEDs so that they can easily replace an old bulb, but some sockets may need to be replaced or updated to support LEDs. Except for lamps, LED fixtures need to be installed in a building, making them more difficult to install and replace than bulbs.

LED bulbs are generally more expensive than traditional bulbs, but much cheaper than buying the entire fixture. Both LED bulbs and fixtures are designed to last; bulbs need to be replaced after approximately 20,000 hours of use and fixtures only need to be replaced when damaged.
